Harlequin Rasbora

Who's ready to find out all about March's freshwater Fish of the Month?!

Our Harlequin Rasbora make fantastic additions to most suitable community aquariums due to their generally peaceful nature. These fish tend to appreciate a natural aquarium with plenty of plants and wood to provide cover when needed. Although not essential, their colours tend to stand out best against a dark backdrop, so use of a dark sand/gravel will help their colours pop!

In the wild, Harlequin Rasbora are usually distributed in the slow flowing rivers and streams where plenty of aquatic plants such as Cryptocoryne species tend to grow. These waters can also be faintly tinted by the tannins released from fallen wood and branches from surrounding trees. This kind of environment can easily be mimicked in the home aquarium as we have lots of different varieties of wood and plants available in store ready to go.

Harlequin Rasbora are a tropical shoaling fish that prefer to be in groups of at least 6 fish, however if you have a larger aquarium with the space to house more, you could easily boost their shoal size up to around 12 fish. They grow to around 5cm when fully mature so won't take up too much space and overcrowd your tank. As they can adapt to a wide range of pH (from as low as 6 to 7.5), they make ideal tank mates for a wide range of species including Tetras, Livebearers, Dwarf Cichlids, and Catfish too! (Although not all of these species can live together).

As they mature, these Rasbora will gain brighter colours but the brightest of which is generally seen more in the males. Females will tend to be rounder bellied and larger, so can usually be identified in a mature group.

In terms of diet, Harlequin Rasbora will accept a wide range of dried foods including a good quality flake food or some suitably sized pellets. They are also known to be a micro-predator, so will appreciate some live or frozen treats such as Bloodworm, Brineshrimp, and Daphnia every so often.
